Saint Charles Recreation and Senior Center

The Recreation and Senior Center is a cornerstone of the broader City Centre Complex in St. Charles, transforming a historically significant structure within the former American Car and Foundry district into a vibrant, multi-generational destination for health, wellness, and community connection. Through the adaptive reuse of the historic BH Building, the project thoughtfully balances preservation with modern performance, creating a welcoming environment that serves residents of all ages.

Spanning approximately 53,000 square feet across two levels, the Recreation Center introduces a wide range of amenities designed to promote active lifestyles and social engagement. Program elements include a state-of-the-art fitness area with cardio and resistance training, indoor basketball and pickleball courts, and a 1/12-mile elevated running track. Additional features such as a children’s play area, café, and outdoor activity spaces further expand opportunities for recreation and gathering, supporting everything from youth programming to community-wide events.

Integrated within the same facility, the approximately 12,000-square-foot Senior Center provides a dedicated and accessible space tailored to the needs of older residents. The program includes a large dining area with a commercial-grade kitchen, activity and game rooms, and flexible spaces for wellness programs and social services. Direct connections to the Recreation Center, adjacent pocket park, and nearby City Hall reinforce a seamless relationship between programs and promote inclusivity across generations.

The design emphasizes connectivity—both within the building and across the larger district. Positioned just south of the new City Hall and adjacent to a landscaped public park, the facility plays a key role in linking the Historic Main Street and Frenchtown neighborhoods while activating the revitalized riverfront. Thoughtful planning enhances accessibility, preserves key architectural elements, and introduces modern systems that support long-term adaptability.

Scheduled for completion in early 2027, the St. Charles Recreation and Senior Center represents a forward-thinking investment in community infrastructure—one that honors the site’s industrial heritage while creating an active, inclusive, and connected destination for generations to come.
