A Ray of Sunshine Made Me Smile

As I visited JEMA’s soon to open Kinetic Park Pavilion and stood under its oculus, an old quote from a favorite philosopher came to my mind: “A ray of sunshine has fallen on my life: I looked behind me, I looked before me, and never have I seen so many good things all at once.” I smiled – this philosopher understood the emotional power of sunshine.

JEMA’s design of the pavilion incorporates an extended roof canopy with a mirrored ceiling. Placed within this mirrored canopy is an oculus. The design of the mirrored oculus is intended to create a focus on and an awareness of shade, shadow and sunlight. Whether it’s taking a nap in its light, basking in its rays, learning and working while it comes through a window, or just playing within its omnipresence, the sun is our greatest generator of joy. The new pavilion acts as a subtle catalyst to reconnect us with the beauty of the adjacent park and the sunshine in our smile.
