Honoring Chip Houser’s Legacy at JEMA

There truly are not enough words to capture the impact that Principal Chip Houser has made at JEMA. Since joining us in 2015, Chip has been an architect, interior designer, Principal, and perhaps most importantly, our Chief People Person.

This is not a retirement announcement (Chip is far too talented to slow down), but it is the right time to share some important news. As of August 1, Chip has transitioned to a Principal Emeritus role. He will continue working with JEMA in a reduced capacity, focusing on the clients he has cultivated and cared for over many years.

Let’s rewind. Twenty-five years ago, I met Chip for the first time while interviewing him for a position at another firm. I was struck immediately by his openness, honesty, humor, and directness. Over the next 11 years, we worked together on and off, and I watched him develop a unique niche in architecture, one that was rooted in a deep and unwavering commitment to the people around him. Chip’s care for his colleagues went beyond professional collaboration; he listened, guided, and looked out for them as individuals.

When Chip joined JEMA in 2015, he quickly rose to Principal and took the lead on our strategic accounts portfolio. He managed some of our largest clients and delivered exceptional, detailed construction documents, all while serving as a true Player and Coach. Inside the office, he became our go-to source for counsel, encouragement, and perspective. Through sharp wit and genuine compassion, Chip could break down barriers, ease tensions, and help navigate difficult conversations. His humor was more than entertainment; it was a strategic way to reduce stress, meet deadlines, and bring people together.

Grounded in integrity, Chip has always been a steadfast advocate for our team. His empathy and commitment to doing right by people cannot be replicated. As he often reminds us, it is never about the job, it is about the people.

It is no surprise, then, that when asked about the most rewarding part of his career, Chip did not name a single project. Instead, he spoke about the many people he has mentored at JEMA, taking pride in their growth, accomplishments, and success.
