20,500 sq ft
Mission Critical Facility
The current Maplewood Fire Station is embedded within the city’s City Hall and Police Station municipal complex located along Manchester Road. The decades-old station is antiquated and no longer meets the needs of a modern fire-fighting force.
The new 20,500 sq. ft. facility is located on a prominent corner site at the intersection of Manchester Road and Bredell Avenue.
Integrating the building into the steep grade while providing a drive-through apparatus bay presented a significant design challenge. The building’s public entry, administration and community/training room is located on the lower level. The facility’s living quarters and support spaces are on the upper level directly adjacent to the apparatus bay which improves overall response time significantly. These diagrams illustrate the innovative site strategy for this project:
The Mission Critical headquarters will be structurally hardened to better withstand natural disasters like tornadoes and seismic events. The building’s emergency generator will be dual-fuel and will be housed and protected in a hardened enclosure. In keeping with the City’s “green” initiatives, the building will achieve LEED Silver certification.
